Former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay has known as out Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano for being “wrong” in downplaying the presence of Chinese vessels in the South China Sea.
In a tweet posted Thursday (August 17), Hilbay mentioned the United States’ train of freedom of navigation is allowed below the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
“Chinese are there to enforce 9DL (nine-dash line) declared baseless in Phils v. Ch.,” he mentioned.
Hilbay’s tweet was accompanied by a hyperlink to the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s article in which Cayetano downplayed the presence of Chinese vessels and the militia close to Pag-Asa Island.
Cayetano mentioned the presence of Chinese ships “does not mean anything” because it may simply be a part of China’s train of freedom of navigation.
SFA is wrong.
Freedom of navigation patrols by US are allowed by UNCLOS. Chinese are there to implement 9DL declared baseless in Phils v. Ch. https://t.co/imWNQlftwJ
