Incumbent barangay officers will get to prolong their time period after the House of Representatives agreed to move the October 2017 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to May 2018.
The choice to move the elections was made throughout an all-party caucus on August 7.
CIBAC party-list Rep. Sherwin Tugna, chair of the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, stated the elections had been moved in help of the administration’s conflict on medicine.
“Postponing the elections would prevent the election of local personalities linked to drug operations. More importantly, it would also give ample time for incumbent barangay officials to address and curb the drug-problem of our country,” he stated.
But for the postponement to turn into official, the House and Senate want to cross a legislation setting a brand new date for the elections.
