Despite topping the net ballot, President Rodrigo Duterte isn’t the one Filipino to land a spot on TIME Magazine’s listing of 100 Most Influential People for 2017.

Senator Leila de Lima, a staunch critic of Duterte, was additionally included within the listing.

She was categorised amongst “Icons” of the world, becoming a member of the likes of acclaimed American actress Viola Davis, Canadian creator Margaret Atwood and Olympic champ Simone Biles.

In her writeup for De Lima, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power mentioned: “It is a disturbing testament to the current solidarity among strongmen and the global surge in impunity that De Lima’s cause has not been more embraced.”

De Lima has been detained on the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame since February over drug-related charges filed by the Department of Justice.

She insists her imprisonment is a part of political persecution by the administration due to her relentless criticism of Duterte.
