President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned Wednesday Russia was giving 5,000 Kalashnikovassault rifles to the Philippines in what’s believed to be the primary ever cargo of Russian weapons to the US ally.

Duterte, who briefly visited Moscow in May as a part of a pivot away from Washington, mentioned the arms would quickly arrive by ship.

The United States has historically been the principle provider of arms to the previous American colony.

But the Philippine armed forces, who’ve been battling each communist insurgents in rural areas and Muslim extremists within the troubled south, stay among the many weakest within the area.

“As part of what I got from Russia when we were there for almost 24 hours, we will have the Kalashnikovs,” Duterte informed a gathering of troopers and police close to Manila.

The Russian embassy declined to touch upon Duterte’s announcement.

Duterte didn’t say which kinds of rifles from the Russian producer are being shipped to Manila.

“As far as I can remember, the Russians have never supplied us with any form of matériel in the past,” defence division spokesman Arsenio Andolong informed AFP.

Duterte, who took workplace final 12 months, has shaken the Philippines’ 70-year-old alliance with the US as he strikes to strengthen ties with China and Russia.

The firebrand chief has sought out different sources of weapons as he angrily rejected US criticism of his lethal warfare on medication that has left 1000’s useless.

China this 12 months donated about 6,000 rifles and 1000’s of rounds of ammunition to Manila. (AFP)
