Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Friday (June 16) has appealed to media to not enable self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) member, retired policeman Arturo Lascanas, get political asylum.
“The media, both local and international, should oppose the grant of an asylum to Mr. Arturo Lascanas because the person murdered in cold blood by him is a media personality,” stated Aguirre in an announcement.
Aguirre stated that Lascanas confessed beneath oath earlier than the Senate that he killed broadcaster Jun Pala allegedly upon the orders of then Davao City mayor and now President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Mr. Jun Pala is the media’s brethren in the profession,” Aguirre identified.
Aguirre was reacting to statements made by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV who recommended Lascans may need secured political asylum after leaving the nation on April eight.
Aguirre stated Lascanas’ asylum would give an exit choice to enemies of media. “All that a media killer in the future will do is to seek the help of a Senator Trillanes and ask him to arrange for the grant of a political asylum abroad to escape punishment for murder,” stated Aguirre.
