Senate President Koko Pimentel on Friday stated House Speaker Bebot Alvarez should not be shy in admitting that he wants a “divorce” law.

He stated Alvarez has already talked about to him about his proposed Dissolution of Marriage invoice which is able to profit trapped in an “unhappy marriage.”

Under Alvarez’s invoice, “severe and chronic unhappiness” can be a floor to dissolve a marriage. Pimentel famous that this issue is just not included within the Family Code. “Bago nga ‘yan pero ang tanong di ba ground sa divorce ‘yun sa ibang bansa?”

“Bakit pa natin itinatago sa pangalang dissolution of marriage? Eh, di diretsuhin na lang natin para mas klaro? Eh kung divorce din pala ‘yan bakit pa natin tinatago ang salitang divorce?” he stated in a radio interview.

“So, ibig sabihin noon merong bagong proposal talaga si Speaker Alvarez. Ang tanong ko lang if that means divorce ‘wag na natin itago kasi hindi ’yan bawal,” the Senate chief stated.

He added, “Kung titignan mo sa Constitution hindi bawal ang divorce except that we do not have it. So, kung gusto natin eh tawagin natin ng tamang label. Let’s call a spade a spade.”

Pimentel on May 22, 2012 confirmed his separation from his spouse of near 12 years, Jewel May Lobaton. “We have been living separately since November 2011,” he stated in a assertion. He is now relationship a household good friend, Kathryn Yu.
