Malacañang has expressed gratitude to Congress for approving President Rodrigo Duterte’s request to increase martial law in Mindanao till December 31.
“The nation has chosen to stand united in defending the Republic,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella mentioned in a press release Saturday (July 22).
Abella careworn that extending martial law is critical for “overall peace and stability” because the rise up in Marawi City continues.
“The rebellion in Marawi continues to persist and we want to stop the spread of the evil ideology of terrorism and free the people of Mindanao from the tyranny of lawlessness and violent extremism,” he mentioned.
Abella urged the general public to proceed with nation-building now that martial law has been prolonged since there’s a lot work to be executed for Mindanao.
Voting 261-18, the Senate and House of Representatives in a particular joint session agreed to increase the validity of Proclamation No. 216 declaring martial law in Mindanao and suspending the writ of habeas corpus within the island group.
In the Senate, solely 4 of the 20 senators current voted in opposition to it.
Meanwhile, 245 House members agreed to Duterte’s request whereas 14 opposed it.
