President Rodrigo Duterte wants Congress’ approval to negotiate with the household of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos for the return of his ill-gotten wealth, Malacañang mentioned.
In a press briefing Monday (September four), presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella vowed that talks with the Marcoses shall be “done professionally and transparently, with a full accounting to the people.”
“We therefore urge the Congress to authorize the President to proceed with negotiations and set parameters taking into account concerns raised by critics and the citizenry,” he mentioned.
“It would be best if we all work together for final justice, closure and national reconciliation,” Abella added.
Duterte earlier revealed that the Marcoses have expressed willingness to return “some” of their wealth, which the late strongman supposedly amassed to shield the financial system.
Some estimates put the quantity of wealth stolen by the Marcoses all through the previous President’s two-decade rule at round $10 billion.
Duterte mentioned he has accepted the Marcoses’ clarification for the previous President’s actions.
