Despite his earlier pronouncement, President Rodrigo Duterte doesn’t see any need to declare martial law past Mindanao in the mean time.
In an interview with reporters Tuesday (June 20) after visiting wounded troopers in Cagayan de Oro City, Duterte mentioned he had to declare martial law in Mindanao to stop terrorists from crossing to Visayas.
“Ang martial law ngayon nandito na. Whether or not I expand it to cover the entire the Philippines is something else. And at this time, it is not called for,” he mentioned.
“The mechanism of the habeas corpus is to prevent the terrorists to gain a foothold in the Visayas. Kasi mas doble na ang sakit,” Duterte added.
The President had warned that he may expand the declaration of martial law nationwide if terrorists linked to ISIS set foot in Luzon.
Duterte additionally mentioned he may declare a “copycat” martial law ought to the Supreme Court strike his first proclamation down as unconstitutional.
