Soldiers will follow rules of engagement to guarantee the security of hostages who could be utilized by the Maute group as suicide bombers, Malacañang stated Monday (August 14).

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella stated the directive on how to deal with suicide bombers got here from President Rodrigo Duterte.

“No less than the Commander-in-Chief has given this primordial consideration and guidance to our troops,” he stated in a press briefing.

Abella confirmed receiving experiences from hostages who managed to escape from the Maute group that the terrorists are planning to use its remaining captives as suicide bombers as soon as they’re cornered by authorities troops.

“We strongly denounce these desperate actions which apparently are carefully calculated to create violent reaction from the general populace in order to create tension between ethnic groups, which the terrorist groups expect to work in favor of their cause,” he stated.

About 46 hostages are nonetheless held by the Maute group.
