MILITARY officers, for the primary time, gave the senators some proof that the Maute extremist group was totally ready to invade Marawi City.

Sen. Joel Villanueva on Thursday stated a number of buildings and homes in Marawi have basements “linked to each other” the place the Maute extremists hid and stockpiled their arms and ammunition.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, martial regulation administrator, on Wednesday gave a video presentation to the senators to justify the request of President Rodrigo Duterte to prolong martial regulation in Mindanao from July 22 till December 31, 2017.

The President declared martial regulation in Mindanao on May 23 to quell the insurrection of the Maute extremist group which seized Marawi City on the identical day to set up an Islamic State (IS) “caliphate” or province in Mindanao.

“Most of us were surprised to find out that these buildings have underground basements linked to one another and the explanation is very obvious: clan wars,” Villanueva stated.

“Here in Metro Manila, we could hardly pinpoint a hundred building na merong underground or basement,” he added.
