Sentaor Grace Poe helps the proposal of taxi operators to evaluate each two years the regulated taxi fare which has been unchanged for the final eight years
Bong Suntay, president of the Phil. National Taxi Operators Association, on Thursday raised the necessity to replace the taxi fare each 2 years. “We actually have the lowest taxi fare in all of Asia. Our taxi fare is 8 years old.”
“Maybe we could suggest that there be an automatic review of taxi fares for example every 2 years whether there is a petition filed or not,” he stated.
Suntay made the comment when requested how the federal government can deal with the issues of taxi drivers amid their declining each day earnings amid the recognition of ride-sharing providers like Uber and Grab.
Asked if she is open to Suntay’s suggestion, Poe stated, “I agree. In reality dapat computerized, naka-peg sa inflation. Kasi ang problema, itong mga drivers natin, might pamilya iyan.
“So, natural kapag hindi mo sila binibigyan ng patas na pagtrato ay gagawa at gagawa iyan ng dahilan para gumawa ng iligal na bagay,” the senator stated.
The present taxi flagdown fare is P40 with extra P3.50 for each succeeding kilometer.
“Nag-re reklamo tayo kasi ayaw tayong ihatid dahil traffic. Papaano naman ang liit ng kinikita nila samantalang ang Grab at Uber ay pinapayagan na mas mataas ang singil. So, hindi rin patas ang laban,” Poe stated.
