Senator Richard Gordon on Friday acknowledged the “humongous” temptation that any public official or rating worker faces on the Bureau of Customs (BoC).
He empathized with the sentiment of resigned Customs chief Nic Faeldon on the difficulties he confronted in addressing corruption on the bureau, particularly the so-called “tara” (payoff) system.
“Well everybody knows na pag pumunta ka sa Customs there is that big, humongous temptation. At talagang mangyayari ‘yan. Marami na nagsabi na may tara talaga (diyan),” Gordon stated in a cellphone patch interview.
“In fairness to Mr. Faeldon, wala pa akong nakikita kay Faeldon except negligence or command responsibility kaya dapat magpaliwanag siya because tumaas naman ng konti (ang collection sa BoC under him),” he stated.
Gordon added, “Ang kasalanan lang ni Faeldon, he was way over his head at pinalibutan siya ng mga sawa duon sa Customs.”
