President Rodrigo Duterte has suggested his son, Paolo Duterte, to go to the Senate and give a stare down to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV who has accused the Vice Mayor of being the brains behind the “Davao Group” which has managed smuggling within the Bureau of Customs.
In an interview in Davao City Saturday night time, Duterte stated Paolo ought to simply invoke his right to stay silent to put an finish to insinuations that he allegedly acquired a complete of P7 million in bribes from Customs dealer Mark Taguba to pace up the latter’s shipments, together with the P6.four billion shabu container which slipped by the BOC’s quick lane.
“Ako, ang advice ko kay Pulong? Punta ka doon, then pagdating mo and he (trillanes) questions, sabihin mo lang na, ‘I will not answer you, I’m invoking my right of silence kasi nung eleksyon pa, hindi pa Presidente ang tatay ko, binibira mo na kami’,” stated Duterte.
“Ang isagot sa iyo, ‘I will refuse to answer your questions because it will intend to incriminate me’. Why? ‘Because sa election pa lang, binibira mo na ako. You have already assumed that I am a (guilty). So what’s the point in answering you?’ So you (Paolo) might as well invoke the right to silence,” stated Duterte.
Duterte urged that Paolo comply with the lead of Faeldon who, in his face-off with Trillanes final August 15, gave Trillanes the stink eye and refused to reply query on whether or not there was corruption within the BOC. (Faeldon later relented and stated ‘yes’ after Senator Dick Gordon intervened).
“Eh di pareho sila ni Faeldon, magtinginan na lang kayo diyan,” stated Duterte.
Duterte clarified that he has not met his son as a result of Paolo didn’t need to speak to him.
“At tsaka hindi ako magbigay ng advice. Alam niya ‘yan, kung nakinig siya, may idea na siya kung anong gawin niya,” stated Duterte.
He stated it was up to Paolo if he needed to go to the Senate and face Trillanes.
“Ang problema, magkahiyaan. (Paolo will just tell Trillanes) ‘Bakit summon mo ako? Where’s your evidence? Bakit mo ako pinatawag? Diyan sa newspaper na grupo ng Davao group? Ito lang ang ebidensya mo? Tapos tatawagin mo ako, gagastos pa ako ng eroplano para lang makinig itong isang…,” stated Duterte.
Duterte stated senators don’t have any right to cite for contempt Paolo and different witnesses for wanting not to incriminate themselves. Neither may they “infer” something from Paolo or different witnesses silence.
“You cannot punish a person or take any inference ‘yang magsabi, sabi, ‘silence is… means (guilty)’. When a person invokes a constitutional right, you cannot infer anything from them. Perfectly alright, and you cannot force a person (to speak). Huwag mo gamitin ‘yang contempt, contempt. Hindi ‘yan… kasi hindi mo… Ang tao, pwedeng hindi talaga,” he added.
