President Rodrigo Duterte wants to prolong martial law in Mindanao for 5 extra months to forestall a spillover of the ideology that spurred the Maute group to launch terrorist assaults.
In an interview in Davao City, Duterte mentioned rehabilitation of Marawi City isn’t the one cause he requested Congress to prolong the declaration of martial law.
“Then again, the retaliation. You know, every space in Mindanao, there are always Moro and a Christian. The contamination of the ideology, ta nakita nilang patay, might spur others just to do the same,” he mentioned.
Duterte mentioned Mindanao’s geography poses a problem in the combat towards terrorism as a result of its borders are porous.
“So, it’s our way of, you know, trying to control things so they will not — there is a spillage, it will not be as great as when you do not have these gaps… stop — stopgaps,” he mentioned.
Should Congress grant his request to prolong martial law for 5 extra months, Duterte hinted he might raise the declaration earlier than the interval expires if the insurrection began by the ISIS-inspire Maute group is stopped.
“What am I supposed to do with martial law? I get my salary with or without a martial law. It doesn’t really bother me anymore. Ano ba ‘yung martial law?” he requested.
