Former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez might now not be a part of the Cabinet, however President Rodrigo Duterte hasn’t forgotten her advocacy on mining.
In his speech on the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s 26th anniversary at Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday (July 12), Duterte recalled how Lopez raised public consciousness in regards to the ailing results of mining on communities.
“Mining impasse, I’m warning the rich. Kasi ‘yung kay Failon plus ‘yung kay Gina, nakita ko talaga na destructive talaga. Nakita mo ‘yung bukid na pagung-pagong na and I do not even see a single tree planted. And the devastation doon sa mga palayan, wala na, hindi na sila makapagtanim,” he stated.
Duterte stated mining firms can’t go on making a living on the expense of robbing the poor of their livelihood.
‘Kung gusto ninyo, kayong mga mayaman, bayaran ninyo sila sa perdition nila. So if he has misplaced 100,000 hectare, tutal mayaman man ‘yang mining, bayaran mo,” he stated.
The President vowed to institute reforms within the mining sector as quickly because the disaster in Marawi City is over.
