President Rodrigo Duterte has apologized to the victims of the magnitude-6.5 earthquake in Leyte for visiting them per week after the calamity struck.

In his speech throughout a state of affairs briefing with Cabinet and native officers in Ormoc City Thursday (July 13), Duterte stated he felt his consideration needs to be centered extra on the disaster in Marawi City.

“Our apologies for our physical absence all these days. You know, we are also having a serious problem in Mindanao, and in the order of priority of things, I think we had to focus first our attention sa Marawi,” he stated.

Duterte has been spending most of his time in Mindanao since putting the area underneath martial legislation on May 23.

Despite the belated visit, Duterte stated he was glad with the federal government’s response to the earthquake.

“I hope that we have done something to show to the people that government is working,” he stated.

“Iyon lang naman ang akin eh, that there is a government, a functioning one, that your money is protected, that everything will be put to good use,” he added.
