The “Republic of the Philippines is not cheap” and shouldn’t be made to agree to a settlement with the Marcos household with out having to contemplate the quantity due to be returned or surrendered to the government, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Wednesday stated.

“Kung ano ‘yung kabuuan na ninakaw na yaman, ‘yun ang ibalik. Hindi naman ‘yun parang pinaambunan ka, ayos na,” he stated.

Pimentel was reacting to President Duterte’s claims that the household of the late President Ferdinand Marcos has dedicated to return, by a mediator, their ill-gotten wealth to the government, together with the controversial “gold bars.”

The Senate chief and Duterte’s ally stated the Marcoses have no right to set conditions on the return of their ill-gotten wealth particularly as a result of there have been nonetheless pending instances towards them.

“Kung may kondisyon kasi, preno. Step on the break. If the donation or the surrender of assets to the government has conditions, then we step on the breaks. Kasi masyadong maraming pending cases, it’s a complicated situation na pag aaralan ng mga abogado to sort out, pero unconditional help to the government in whatever form are welcome,” he stated.

“Kung donation yan, tanggapin natin but it should not affect the cases. No conditions from the point of view of the donor, tanggapin natin (kung_ wala naman sila hinihingi in return. Tulong ito answer our deficit and yet anong kapalit, alamin natin. Kung kapalit is dismissal of cases, una sa lahat hindi pwede i-compromise ang criminal cases. Mag research ang abugado nila. Maging maingat tayo especially kung may strings attached. Pero pag donation sa government natin, tanggapin natin,” Pimentel stated.
