Burma (Myanmar) is sending Nobel Peace Prize winner and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi as head of its delegation to the summit of leaders of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in Manila this week.

President Duterte, practically 10 months into his presidency, is enjoying host to the Asean heads of state and authorities.

The Asean summit comes to the Philippines at a time when the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf is making an attempt to penetrate areas removed from its strongholds in Basilan and Sulu provinces within the South.

Combined forces

Last week, the bandit group tried to seize hostages in Bohol province, in Central Visayas, the place Asean conferences had been held.

Combined army and police forces attacked the bandits, wiping them out and capturing associates who tried to assist them.

Marciano Paynor Jr., director common of the Asean National Organizing Council, stated on Monday that every one Asean heads of state, aside from the Burmese chief, had confirmed their attendance within the summit, which begins on Friday.

Bilateral conferences

“Traditionally [the Burmese head of state] does not attend multilateral meetings. So they always assign somebody … . But they have designated Aung San Suu Kyi as head of the delegation,” Paynor advised reporters.

This would even be an event for Mr. Duterte to maintain bilateral conferences with different Asean leaders, Paynor stated.

He stated Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam had requested bilateral conferences between their leaders and Mr. Duterte.

The bilateral conferences might be on prime of the conferences that Mr. Duterte have with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, each of whom are making state visits to the Philippines throughout the Asean summit, Paynor stated.

Asked if there have been Asean states that had expressed considerations about safety within the nation, Paynor answered within the damaging.

“They respect the decision of the host. They do not question,” he stated.

Paynor stated the Asean conferences in Bohol “successfully” concluded on Friday.

Briefings for Duterte

He stated Mr. Duterte had been making ready for the summit, receiving briefings on the problems to be mentioned by the regional grouping.

Mr. Duterte might be given a closing briefing on Tuesday evening, Paynor added.

“One thing with the President, he absorbs very quickly. There are figuratively a hundred and one issues so no one is expected to have a mastery of all unless you are in these meetings every time so this is his first time, it’s expected that he does not know all the issues, but of the many issues, he has a fairly good grasp of these,” he stated.
