Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the death University of Philippines scholar Carl Arnaiz by the hands of Caloocan City policemen who accused him of being a thief.
In Department Order No. 576 issued by Aguirre, the NBI has been “directed and granted authority to conduct investigation and case build-up over the killing of Carl Angelo H. Arnaiz, and if evidence warrants, to file appropriate charges thereon.”
“Further, Director (Dante) Gierran shall submit a report to the Office of the Secretary of Justice on its current activities related to the implementation of this Order,” he additionally advised the NBI Director.
Arnaiz was killed in Caloocan City on August 18 by policemen who claimed he fired pictures at them whereas he resisted arrest.
