Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has expressed considerations of the presence the Maute terrorist group in Cagayan de Oro City which has been designated by the Supreme Court (SC) because the venue of the trial of its members.

Aguirre voiced his uneasiness following the arrest of Maute bomb maker, Mahammad Noaim Maute, on Thursday (June 15) in Cagayan de Oro City.

“Imagine, one of the personalities involved in the Marawi takeover already in Cagayan de Oro City!” stated Aguirre in an announcement.

“This fact justifies the collective fear of our prosecutors and everyone who will be involved in the prosecution of these cases,” he confused.

The SC had issued a June 6 ruling which turned down his request to create particular courts outdoors Mindanao to attempt members of the Maute over the assault in Marawi City.

Instead, the SC designated the Cagayan de Oro City regional trial court docket (RTC) for the duty.

However, Aguirre fears the safety of the venue and appealed to the SC to designate as a substitute the Taguig City RTC to attempt the Maute.
